Things got a little toasty at FireSky yesterday when air conditioning stopped working at the Stargate Worlds offices for three hours.
Some temperature gauges were reading 115 degrees Fahrenheit outdoors at the time the air conditioners stopped. Within minutes the server room, which is supposed to be between 70 to 75 degrees, raised to 100.
"My office is typically one of the coldest in the studio since it runs off the same duct line as the server room," said Sound Designer Nick LaMartina. "I frequently get comments on this from anyone that steps into my office. Yeah, it's cold, but it's certainly preferable to the way it was before the circulator was fixed in my vent. Hot and stuffy.
"So when the breaker blew yesterday and the AC went down, it was just like old times, and it made me very thankful that my office is as cool, even if it's sometimes frigid."
Lead Artist Austin Germer had a different perspective. “Heat makes people giddy,” he said. “Its amazing when you raise the temperature in the room how people can no longer sit still and do their work. People get up and just have to talk or get some water.
“I found myself getting up looking at other peoples work, breaking others concentration and feeling a little funny myself. It was like my motivation to get stuff done went out the door. It made me appreciate technology once again.”
Servers were disabled according to priority, the most important remaining on until the very last minute, until work upstairs was effectively halted just before 5 o’clock PST. StargateWorlds.com and Stargate Worlds Forum were down for approximately three hours.
Needless to say, things are working again today! Thanks for sticking with us through the summer heat as we work to bring you our MMO!
